Primary Charge Roller PCR Roller Charge Corona Units
In laser printers and photocopiers, the OPC drum (Organic Photoconductor) is mainly charged by the primary charge roller or charge corona unit. The choice of charging method can vary depending on the design and technology of the specific printer or copier model.
The primary charge roller is a new, environmentally friendly charging method that reduces ozone production and provides uniform charging. It is widely used in laser printers and low-speed copiers. However, high-speed copiers, due to charging speed considerations, do not adopt the method of using a PCR Roller but instead use the charging Corona unit.
The charge roller is a multi-layered rubber roller with conductive properties to be charged easily and evenly by the applied voltage. The charge corona unit uses a thin corona wire to generate a corona charge to the OPC drum. It is not as environmentally friendly as the PCR Roller, but it won’t cause noise when printing. Many Konica Minolta charge corona units are popular in the market, and they consist of a metal shelf, charge grid, charge saw, and sponge.

If you notice dots, ghosting, or streaks, the primary charge roller or charge corona assembly may be worn out. To ensure the normal operation of the printer and clear printouts, you may need to replace the PCR roller or the charge corona unit.
PCR Roller and Charge Corona Assembly
We may supply high quality and compatible new PCR rollers for Kyocera, Minolta, HP, and Samsung printers at very competitive prices. Compatible charge Corona assembly is available for popular models of Xerox, Brother, Kyocera, Ricoh, Minolta, and other printer brands. We also offer original-quality or original PCR Rollers for Kyocera, Ricoh, Xerox, and Minolta printers, but it is only necessary to choose them for a few models.
Time To Replace Primary Charge Roller
The primary charge roller can become worn or damaged after several printing cycles. In general, it is recommended to replace the rollers every 2-6 toner cartridge refills. If there are issues with the charge roller, it can cause problems like unclear printing, significantly affecting the printer’s performance.
Before replacing the primary charge roller, you should inspect the roller first. If there are visible cracks, rips, or other visible damage, please consider replacing the roller. Secondly, clean the PCR roller if there is no visible damage. It’s essential to keep the surface of the primary charge roller clean, preventing the accumulation of dust, debris, or other impurities that could affect its conductivity. You can gently wipe the surface of the charge roller with a clean, soft cloth to remove dirt, and add some isopropyl alcohol if necessary.
If the following problems still exist after cleaning, you may need to replace the primary charge roller.
- Background: If defective PCR Rollers do not charge up the drum sufficiently, it may allow some excess toner to adhere to the white areas and create the background on the printing.
- Ghosting: If the charge roller has difficulty discharging a drum sufficiently, the drum surface will not be completely discharged, and the toner will be attracted into unwanted areas of the previous job and create a ghost image.
- Dots or Lines: If the resistance of primary charge rollers is too low, the maximum current through the roller and the air gap is not limited. It may lead to an area with lines or dots where there is no protective layer that isolates the aluminium substrate of the drum.
