Fuser Picker Finger Upper and Lower Fuser Separation Claw
The fuser picker finger, also known as the separation claw, is a small, spring-loaded claw-like mechanism located at the fuser assembly and close to the fuser roller or fuser film. The function is to prevent the paper from sticking to the fuser roller or film and ensure that the printed paper is separated from the fuser rollers or fuser film and smoothly released to the output tray or delivery area.
There are upper and lower fuser separation claws. Upper picker fingers are used to separate the paper from the upper fuser roller or fuser film. Lower picker fingers are used to separate the paper from the lower pressure rollers.
For some printers and copiers, there are drum picker fingers. In the process of transfer, due to the electrostatic attraction, the paper may stick tightly to the OPC drum. The function of the drum picker finger is to separate the paper from the surface of the OPC drum.

Fuser Picker Finger Replacement
Due to the constant friction between its sharp claws and the fuser roller and the paper being output, over time, the outer coating of the fuser picker finger can wear out. This can lead to the accumulation of toner debris, which, on one hand, increases friction with the fuser roller, causing damage to the heating roller. On the other hand, when the back of the separation claw becomes less smooth due to toner buildup, the paper output may become curved or wrinkled, affecting print quality. It may even cause paper jams.
Therefore, if you notice wrinkles in the output paper, it’s important to clean the hot roller stripper. The method is to carefully remove the separation claw from the fuser unit, meticulously wipe the toner debris stuck off it, and carefully smooth the back. Generally, it’s not necessary to smooth the pointed claws. After cleaning, you can reinstall it, please note it is better to change the positions of these picker fingers to ensure even wear across all claws.
If the problems still exist after cleaning, you should consider replacing the fuser picker fingers.
